Infection!
I’ll try and make this short. For more details, you can call me or email me.
Cook had what appeared to be a very serious condition called a bow tendon. It could have been the end of me riding her, maybe forever, due the extreme amount of stall rest she would need.
I was worried and her leg was getting worse. So we hauled her to a different vet.
It is an infected abcess. Thank God. It’s gross, its’ infected, and she has to get a shot with 20 ml of pencilin twice a day, bute and has a nice cast-type bandage on her leg. she will be on complete stall rest for a week. I get to practice my IM shots. I did the first 2 today and they went well.
She will heal and she will be ridable.

Cook was way awesome at the hospital. She didn’t have to be doped at all until the very end and it wasn’t because she was being bad, the vet just wanted to make her more comfortable (they had to scrub and re-scrub her oozing, pus-filled leg.). she minded her manners very well. The vet wanted to see her trot out and she trotted out in the hospital aisleway just perfectly with me. Even hurting, she is the best mare around.

I did manage to make it back in time for a lesson. fun fun fun. It was one of those lessons where I knew I was having a good time and was doing well. But now when I THINK about it, as I am blogging, its’ even better. I really got to do fun things today.
So I had a good day.

Glad to hear you will be able to ride Cook again. You have to give shots?! Um, thank you, but no…. I get sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

Well I’m glad its not a bowed tendon. And it’s good to know she’ll be good as new soon. Wonder how she got an abcess.
Hey, I’m glad I didn’t plan to go to PW today; this wind is killer!

yes. I give IM (intramuscular shots). Its’ not for everyone - there are lots of people who don’t.
But its a good skill to have.
My next thing is to have a vet teach me IV. finding the vein.

I’m not squeamish about a whole lot. Except frogs.
